What's the Best Age for Newborn Photography? Charlotte, NC

What’s the Best Age to Do Newborn Photography?

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is, “When is the best time to schedule our newborn photography session?”

If you’re planning a studio newborn photography session, you’ve probably heard that the first two weeks are ideal. While there is some truth to that, I believe the best time for newborn photos is a little more flexible than you might think.

In my studio, I love photographing babies between 7 and 18 days old, with days 12 and 13 being my personal sweet spot. But just as important as choosing the right age for your baby is giving your family time to settle into life with your newest little love.

Why Are the First Few Weeks Ideal for Newborn Photography?

During the first few weeks of life, newborns are still adjusting to the world outside the womb. They tend to have that beautiful, curled-up newborn look, and many are still comfortable being gently positioned into the sweet, snuggly poses we love in studio newborn photography.

Babies in this stage also tend to spend a good portion of their day sleeping, which can make it easier to capture those peaceful, dreamy images of your little one all curled up and cozy.

Of course, every baby is different! Some newborns are naturally sleepier than others, and some prefer to stay awake and take in everything around them. There is no magic switch that flips at a certain age, but those early weeks often offer wonderful opportunities to capture the tiny details and delicate features that change so quickly.

Why I Love Days 12 and 13

If I could pick my favorite age for a studio newborn session, it would be around 12 to 13 days old.

By this point, many families have had a little time to find their footing at home. Mom has had a chance to begin recovering from birth, parents have started learning their baby's cues, and everyone has had a little time to bond and adjust to their new routine.

I love this stage because it often offers a beautiful balance. Your baby is still very much in that fresh newborn phase, with tiny fingers, delicate features, and those irresistible little stretches and curls. At the same time, your family may feel a little more comfortable getting out of the house and spending some time in the studio.

Those first days with a new baby are precious, exhausting, emotional, and sometimes a little overwhelming. I never want parents to feel like they need to rush through those moments or worry about getting to a photography session before they're ready.

Your recovery, your baby's needs, and your family's well-being always come first. The photos will be there when you're ready.

Why I Recommend Waiting Until at Least Day 7

You may have heard that newborn photography must happen within the first 5 to 10 days after birth. While some photographers prefer to work with babies during that very early window, I intentionally allow a little more flexibility with my studio sessions.

I typically recommend scheduling your newborn session between days 7 and 18 because I want you to have time to settle in at home, heal, bond with your baby, and begin adjusting to your new life together.

The first week can be a whirlwind. You're recovering from delivery, figuring out feeding schedules, navigating sleepless nights, and getting to know this tiny person who has suddenly changed your entire world. The last thing I want is for you to feel pressured to pack a diaper bag, get everyone dressed, and leave the house before you feel ready.

There is absolutely no need to worry about newborn photos during those first few days. Soak up the snuggles. Let someone else bring you a meal. Rest when you can. Enjoy those quiet moments with your baby.

When you're ready, I'll be here to help create beautiful photographs of this fleeting season.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 18 Days?

First, take a deep breath. You have not missed your chance!

While days 7 to 18 are my preferred window for studio newborn photography, it certainly doesn't mean beautiful newborn photos are no longer possible after that.

With 14 years of newborn photography experience and thousands of babies photographed, I've worked with newborns at many different ages and understand how to adapt my approach to each baby's individual needs and personality.

Older newborns may be more alert, stretch out more, or prefer different positions than younger babies. Their sleep patterns and comfort levels can also change as they grow. With experience, patience, and a flexible approach, I can work with these changes to create images that beautifully capture your baby's unique features and personality.

Even if your baby is three, four, or more weeks old, I encourage you to reach out rather than assume you've missed your opportunity. We may need to adjust our expectations and the style of images we create, but there is still so much beauty to capture.

Every baby is different, and some of my favorite images come from simply following a baby's lead rather than trying to fit them into a particular timeline.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

I recommend booking your studio newborn photography session during your second or third trimester. We'll choose a tentative session date based on your due date, then adjust it once your baby arrives.

Because babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, I build flexibility into the process. Whether your little one arrives a week early or decides to take their time, we can work together to find a date that fits their age and your family's needs.

My goal is to make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible, without adding unnecessary pressure to an already life-changing time.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

Yes, I love photographing newborns between 7 and 18 days old, especially around days 12 and 13. That window often offers wonderful opportunities for those classic, sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits.

But here's what I want every new parent to know: There is no need to stress about getting newborn photos done within a perfect number of days.

Your baby won't be a newborn forever, and capturing this season is a beautiful way to preserve those tiny details you'll want to remember for years to come. Whether your baby is 12 days old or several weeks older, there is still an opportunity to create meaningful photographs of your growing family.

Give yourself permission to recover, bond, and enjoy your baby. When you're ready, we'll create something beautiful together.

Ready to plan your newborn photography session? I'd love to help you choose the timing that works best for your family. Reach out to reserve your studio session, and we'll take care of the details together!
